Fabric is basted to the hexagon templates to keep the fabric in place. The hexi shapes are then hand sewn together. Hexagons are rather versatile and quite a few designs can be made using this shape although this isn't the only shape that can be used this way. "Apple Core" shapes can also be made using this technique too. Quilters make a lot of pillows, table mats and throws using this very popular paper piecing method. You need to experiment to see which technique is best for you. String Blocks are usually also backed by a 'foundation' and paper can also be substituted in the block. Strips of fabrics are sewn onto the foundation block and once all the segments are completed, they are sewn together to form interesting b
