Paper Piecing 1/4" Issue 1 Vol 1 | Page 4

VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 PAGE What is Paper Piecing? Geo Star Block Block measures 12” (30cm) and is on the easy level of paper piecing Foundation/ Paper Piecing: For this quilting technique, paper is used as the 'foundation' of your block. Stitching is followed in order of the templates which make up the different sections of the block. Fabric is lined up onto the back of the paper and the seam line is sewn and opened up. The next number following will be done again in the same way until all the small sections have been covered with fabric and pressed open. The block is trimmed and you will then continue on to the next template to form a block. Once all the template pieces are done, they are joined together to form your completed block. Smaller stitching perforates the paper which is then removed when the block is finished. Once you are feeling more confident about paper piecing, you can try a few of the patterns in our mini-mag. It won't be long before you will be trying something a little more challenging. Freezer Paper Piecing: This technique is similar to foundation/paper piecing where your template is on freezer paper and the numbered sections need to be pieced. Unlike paper piecing you do not sew onto the paper. Each section of the freezer paper is cut out and the sections are ironed onto the piece of fabric you wish to use. Sections are then sewn together and the freezer paper is used as a guide. 4
