Nestled in the heart of Palestine, the Texas Jailhouse— also known as the Historic Anderson County Jail— is more than just a historic landmark; it’ s a magnet for paranormal enthusiasts from around the world. The jail’ s journey through history and the supernatural has captivated visitors and investigators alike.
This formidable 11,000-square-foot fortress, built in 1931, is constructed from solid concrete and steel and has stood as a silent witness to the many waves of change that have swept through the city.
Long before the jail’ s walls were built, the sacred hills between the Trinity and Neches Rivers were home to the Caddo Indians, whose presence and culture significantly shaped the early history of the region. In 1819, just down the hill from what would become the Texas Jailhouse, an Indian trading post welcomed the first settlers to Palestine, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the area’ s history. This deep-rooted past lends an additional layer of mystique to the site, as it stands at the crossroads of Native tradition, settlers’ stories, and later, the mysterious tales that have led to the jail’ s current reputation.
This site has served as a repository of local history and a symbol of law enforcement in Palestine. Its imposing presence and aged architecture tell stories of a bygone era, but behind its walls, legends and mysteries have grown over the decades.
When Texas Jailhouse co-founders Jeremy Janz and Sonia Martinez acquired the 1931 jail, they envisioned an attraction rooted in history and mystery.
“ It wasn’ t long after moving to Palestine that I just knew it was a haunted little town,” Martinez said.“ The historic homes, buildings, and vast cemeteries led to the number one question we get asked about the jail--is it haunted?”
