The influence and effects brought on by the efforts of those in our community are strong . Without the people that start these great organizations , that support them by being members , volunteering , and carrying out their missions , hope would be a lot harder to find . Palestine is full of people who are actively trying to create a brighter future for our kids and has been for generations . It ’ s a tradition of excellence Palestine has embodied for a very long time . A final example of excellence in service from right here in Palestine : At the stop sign just over the railroad tracks where Magnolia intersects Spring St downtown , look to your left and find a granite marker . Carved on that marker : ‘ Frank Sawyer ’, ‘ Palestine ’ s Best Liked Citizen ’. Mr . Sawyer delivered packages to businesses around town , straight from the depot to their front door . He was a hard worker , cheerful and friendly to one and all . He must have been someone special to have such a fine monument erected in his memory . Frank was neither rich nor powerful , but he obviously made a big impact on those he met as he served in our community . What is the real spirit of excellence in service ?
