On the other side of the Atlantic, American modernists such as Arthur Dove, John Marin, Marsden Hartley and Georgia O’Keefe, embraced landscape painting and translated them into abstract works of art. Richard Diebenkorn and Helen Frankenstein are among many others who used the landscape to take the genre into another dimension, where only a mere suggestion of the natural world remained. However, the landscape genré has remained the peg on which most artists still hang their hats. Perhaps Agnes Martin is a perfect example of a twentieth century modern painter who, despite following the trend towards minimalism, gave acknowledgement to nature or natural forms in her paintings titles, even though her simplistic horizontal line paintings suggested nothing of the kind, her love of the natural world (via Buddhism) was a thread that never left her. paintings this page: Top: The Hay Wain painted:1821. bottom Barges on the Stour (sketch) 1811.
