The Ochos
Sunday World Cup Paintball
Sunday at the World Cup is the Super Bowl of paintball , and this year ’ s action certainly lived up to the comparison in every possible way . It included a David and Goliath matchup , three players sent to the penalty box in one match , a square-off of veterans , and the emergence of new heroes . Many dreams dashed , some realized . But one thing was for certain : It was an epic weekend for Texas paintball .
The Ochos
The Ochos started with Dynasty , who hasn ’ t had to struggle this hard in half a decade , getting into a battle of legends with Aftershock . The match started with Dynasty doing what Dynasty does , but it did not come easily . Going up 2-0 , there was a lot of chirping at the refs coming from guys in blue jerseys . Aftershock came out seeming anxious and as if they were pressing a little too hard . That energy must have been contagious , as Dynasty made some uncharacteristic physical mistakes including an overshot slide out d-side by Greenspan followed by a trip over the snake beam by Margott . ‘ Shock would make an epic comeback , and the match would go to a 2-2 overtime .
‘ Shock broke out with a fresh look , leaving Alex Rodriguex at home to quarterback . Archie Montemayor would make a hero ’ s run down center and pick up a two-pack only to find himself at the end of L . J . Parrish ’ s gun . Parrish would then floast up center and drop one before being picked up and trading with Marcello Margott . With Chris Scherer and Harrison Frye still alive , they would make a dynamic finish wrapping on A-Rod . But when Dynasty comes off the field calling a match a “ nail-biter ” you know it is fierce competition on the Pro field that day .
AC : Diesel continued to realize their potential , defeating Infamous 5-2 in an aggressive match . And in the same set , PaintballFit surprised Damage with a 5-1 win with chants of “ Texas , Texas ” coming from the stands . It was clear that the crowd favorite was the rookie squad here at ‘ Cup .
Impact kept their string of Sunday appearances alive , have made every Sunday this season , advancing into the Semis . But the upstart Uprising did not make it a walk in the park for them . In one of the best moves of the weekend , Nate Holland ran a tree drill with two Impact players pinned in the dorito corner . Using the snake side corner can as cover , Holland moved on the flag station and lept in to smash the buzzer , winning the 2-on-1 without firing a shot and tie the match up 2-all . After that , Impact would turn on the jets , though , and rolled into the Quarterfinals with a 6-2 win .
