It has been said that Classic 10-man mechanical woodsball is the true roots of paintball . On June 4 and 5 , 2022 at Paintball Sports Inc . Plattekille , New York , I came to understand that truth .
This season , the newly formed World Classic Paintball League decided to organize five classic-style tournaments in various locations including this one in New York . PSI field owner , Jerry Braun , partnered with Kevin Donaldson and the Master Blasters taking the opportunity to revitalize what was once called The Woodsball World Cup . Although it has been rebranded as WCPL New York , to those who were there , the moniker will always remain the same .
In 2021 , Kathy Alvarez , her brother an original Master Blaster , attended the Woodsball World Cup and came away with a vision . Seeing how under-represented women were in this arena , she decided she wanted to build an all-female squad and bring them back for the same tournament in 2022 .
She hit the ground running , recruiting women from all over the sport and The Valkyries Woodsball Team was born .
I received a text message from Kathy in late-June , and as a scenario baller with no tournament experience or pedigree , I was humbled and a bit confounded by the opportunity , but I couldn ’ t pass it up . So , not knowing what any of this was really about , I blindly decided to take the ride and see where it went .
