They can then be combined or further divided by the surface on which they are played and the type of equipment allowed, but those variations can be explored another time. The important distinction we need to make here is that air ball is played with inflatable bunkers, hyperball is played on drainage- or hyper-pipe fields, mounds are played on dirt and grass mounds, and woodsball is played in the woods. Woodsball is not scenario ball.
From rec ball, the next step in the scenario funnel is Big Games. Big Games are based on the same three flavors as rec ball, often combining all of the rec ball game formats into one major event with large numbers of people. They are played on any, and all, of the surfaces described above, and are typically hosted at established fields. But what defines them is the use of objectives that are given point values to be tallied at the end of the event to determine a winner, and that players are allowed to respawn a predetermined locations when they are shot and eliminated.
Big Games introduce players to the concept of commanders and recruitment. They require higher levels of communication, the ability to rally large numbers of people to accomplish a task( such as securing or maintaining a position), and they require a great deal of networking within the community for recruitment. They can become political, for sure, as teams organize and make commitments to support one commander or another, and factions are built throughout seasons that come and go with the tides of time. Rather than hitting a practice field on the regular, those in the Big Game world spend their time organizing people with hours of meetings, phone calls, and messaging to gather their human resources for battle. What happens behind the curtain in the world of the Big Game is carefully plotted mind games that go well beyond the paintball field.
Scenarios take the Big Game rules, structure, and formats to another level by introducing a storyline. They are designed as immersive events with characters, role players, themed props, and multi-step missions...
