The Bullets , 1979 - 1981

• 1979-1981 : The Debate Hayes Noel had a friend that just returned from hunting Cape Buffalo in Africa . He told Noel how thrilling it was to be so close to danger and how he felt like the hunted at times . Noel told this story to Charles Gaines and the two wondered if they were stalking each other , who would come out on top ... the city boy Noel , or Gaines , who spent his whole life in the woods hunting ?
• March 1981 : Gaines Orders Two Nelspots From a Sheep Rancher ’ s Catalog
A mutual friend of Noel and Bob Gurnsey , George Butler , found Nelspot 007 marking pistols in a sheep rancher ’ s catalog . He told Gaines about it and days later Gaines ordered two to test the viability of using them in a survival game .
• Late May , 1981 : Charles Gaines and Hayes Noel Play a One-On-One Duel and Plan the First Game
Noel and Gaines play a 45-minute oneon-one game in the woods in New Hampshire . Gaines called the game , “ so much fun ” and the two begin to create the concept of the game . Gaines writes the rules and sends out more than 40 invitations . Nine people accept and with Noel , Gaines and Gurnsey , the twelve-player game is set .
• June 26 , 1981 : The Pregame Cocktail Party & Calcutta
The evening before the first game the 12 contestants , their wives , girlfriends and families gather at the lakeside home of Bob Gurnsey ’ s in-laws in Lake Sunapee in New Hampshire for a pregame party and Calcutta , where they gamble on who would win the game . Lionel Atwill , A Vietnam vet is
