Project Overview
California State University, Long Beach’s new, $44.9
million Student Success Center opened its doors to
students for the Spring 2019 semester. The 81,000
SF facility was formerly Peterson Hall 2, a 1950’s era
building in need of some upgrades. CSULB renovated
the facility into the new Student Success Center,
which is now home to the Bob Murphy Access
Center, undergraduate health science research
and the Women’s Gender & Equity Center. P2S CM
provided construction and project management
services to the university, ensuring that the project
was ready for students by Spring 2019.

Solution
The renovation included seismic upgrades, new
fire sprinklers, gender neutral restrooms and a
lactation room. There was major structural rework
in seismic retrofitting to the existing structure,
along with additional steel to shift the building
hallways to the south and create a new central
stair lobby and a new west-end student lounge.
The project had significant challenges from the
beginning, like the site’s continued occupancy
during construction, with classrooms and offices
surrounding the project. CSULB and the CM team
(as an extension of the CSULB staff) were committed
to enabling the success of the project. The CM
team worked diligently to establish a culture of
mutual respect and trust, and all parties rallied to
overcome challenges by working collaboratively,
with the shared mutual commitment to completing
the project safely, on time, on budget and to a high
degree of quality.
