INNOVATION
INTERVIEW WITH TRAVIS TAYLOR
P2S has seen significant innovation in recent years as technology continues to revolutionize how buildings are designed , constructed , and managed . We have a history of using cutting-edge technologies and techniques to deliver innovative solutions that are tailored to meet the unique needs of our clients . From Building Information Modeling ( BIM ) software to virtual reality and augmented reality tools , P2S and the AEC industry are adopting new technologies to improve efficiency , accuracy , and sustainability .
In addition to technology-driven innovation , P2S is committed to sustainability and has a long history of incorporating sustainable design principles into its projects . The firm ’ s focus on sustainability has earned it numerous awards and recognition for its leadership in the green building movement .
Recently , P2S Director of Project Management , Travis Taylor , gave a presentation on innovation at the ACEC California Conference . We had the opportunity to speak with him about his perspective on the importance of innovation .
Thank you for making the time to speak with us today . Following your recent speech and presentation delivered at the ACEC conference , we wanted to learn more about how you implement innovation into your work here at P2S . Can you start by telling us why innovation is so important ?
Travis Taylor : Innovation needs to be part of our culture because it impacts how we operate , make decisions , and act . In my presentation , I talk about how data suggests that with innovation , there ’ s a real bottom-line impact , including increases in revenue growth . Also , innovation is essential to the growth of our company and for us to remain competitive in the marketplace . It ’ s also fun , and I think it provides people with a purpose . It ’ s great for recruiting and attention . Employee satisfaction and career development are integral to our innovation culture , so it provides our employees different avenues to express themselves and explore options and opportunities for discovery through their roles at P2S .
How do you approach innovation in your role ?
TT : It ’ s all about creating ideas . You have to start with the premise that all ideas are good ideas and you have to be comfortable with making mistakes ; mistakes are part of the process . If you look at the history of innovation , there are no mistakes , just ideas that didn ’ t work . The idea is that you learn from those and you build on them on your next attempt . Innovation doesn ’ t always have to be a home run . Sometimes you have small , incremental innovations that still have important impact and benefits . So I look at it like this : you start with ideas , you might make mistakes , you learn from those mistakes , and you find the benefit as you move forward .
How do you encourage others to continue to be innovative after having made a ‘‘ mistake ’’?
TT : One way I encourage employees not to give up on innovation is by rewarding effort rather than being punitive on mistakes . As a leader , you really want to encourage those around you who are really putting forth that effort to try something new . I think when you reward your employees ’ efforts , it really gives them the comfort to be honest and the courage to take risks .
How do you implement innovation into each project ?
TT : Within the company , we have the Incubator Group , which provides a great process and follows a great model based on our values of leadership , integrity , teamwork , professionalism and persistence . Additionally , our Incubator promotes collaboration . We have strict schedules and well-developed plans that we ’ re held accountable for .
