We also specialize in interior and exterior lighting control integration . We have a deep understanding of the role lighting controls play in increasing the efficiency and performance of the lighting system . Lastly , we provide a construction administration service that ensures design intent is realized . Our services also include lighting submittals , coordinating fixture finishes , responding to RFIs , documenting deviations from design during walkthroughs , aiming and focusing luminaires and coordaining the programming for color-changing luminaires and the dimming system .
How do you work with clients to create the best design ?
Ellie Motevalian : In many projects , I ’ ve worked with architects and interior designers who have a big picture and ideas of how the lighting should be . We start by understanding these ideas , such as what kind of lighting they want for each space . Once we feel that we have a good grasp of what the client wants , we try to enhance that vision and add value . We show them different ideas and concepts that might be a little different than what they initially had in mind , but I can tell you that in many of our projects , the client ends up changing many of the design elements after speaking with us and learning about different possibilities . This might mean that they change their ceiling design so we can better integrate the lighting to fit their concept . But it all starts with truly understanding the architect ’ s initial concept , and from there , we begin to develop the design further and enhance their vision .
How does lighting affect a space and its occupants ?
EM : Lighting is magic . I think it ’ s one of the most important architectural design elements , either from natural or artificial sources . In addition to the visual effects , lighting can evoke people ’ s emotions and enhance their experience of a space . There has been a lot of recent research focusing on the non-visual effects of lighting that shows human well-being and health benefit from high-quality lighting design . So , there are the visual effects of light , the non-visual effects , and the emotional effect on people and all of these can change with the architecture to create different atmospheres .
Lighting also affects your circadian rhythm , performance and alertness . Many manufacturers are working on technologies that deal with the different spectrum of light . With LED technology , we can change the spectrum of light to achieve different non-visual benefits for the people using a space . We always try to educate the client , architect , and interior designer on all the available technologies , and we definitely propose those for projects . We ’ re upfront that some of these technologies come with added costs . We tell clients how much more they might cost , and we go from there . Then we talk to them about which spaces might benefit the most from these solutions and still keep the project within its budget .
