On this program, Arild Remmereit
introduces us to a lovely Swedish overture
that doesn’t deserve to be buried away.
It was extremely difficult to be a female
composer in 19th-century Europe, but the
talented Elfrida Andrée fought bravely to
make her creative voice heard. She studied
composition and organ at the Royal
Academy of Music in Stockholm, but
since women were not accepted as resident
students, she graduated as an external
student. In Copenhagen, she studied with
the great Niels Gade, composer and
Mendelssohn’s co-conductor at the Leipzig
