Shipmates:
So, how have we been changing? We started the year and right after D-Train we were hit with COVID. We were shut down for a while. But then we were introduced to a new form of communication called “ZOOM”. We learned how to communicate with our members differently. We learned how to train differently. We learned how to hold meetings differently. And that was a major change for the way we do business in the Auxiliary.
Next, we decided to change the way we train our current and future staff officers. Staff officers used to be assigned a position and then told they had to figure it out themselves if they did not have someone to show them. Commodore Bowen had a vision of how we would change that. From that vision came Staff Officer College. Starting in September 2020 we trained over 270 members and gave them a basis and foundation to be staff officers. This program was extraordinarily successful and the model for the rest of the country.
Then came elections and a big change was to follow. From casting ballots in person, we then went to a virtual meeting and casting ballots electronically through third party election software. We successfully completed our District, Division and as of this writing, most Flotilla elections.
Now, as of this writing we are undertaking another major change. A transition from one Commodore to a newly elected Commodore. This change involves realignment and change of staff and operations. But we go through this
every two years and we have always been successful. There is no reason to believe that this transition and/or change will be any different. It is what we do. We adapt. We change.
Our most important and prized resource is our members. Please continue to watch out for each other. These past few months have affected people differently. A phone call or text to make sure everyone is okay will go a long way. Wear a mask, wash your hands frequently and maintain social distancing. Please follow the guidelines, for your state, and the Coast Guard. They say things will get worse before they get better. I am praying they just get better. When it is safe, we will begin operations. But only when it is safe. Your health and safety are my number one priority.
Finally, it is my great honor and privilege to have been elected as your next Commodore. I am looking forward to the next 2 years with your assistance, guidance, determination and continued passion for our United States Coast Guard.
Stay well and be safe.

"Change is all around us. Change is generally an unwanted, undesirable exercise to undertake. People like the “status quo”. They like things to “just go on” in life, and not let anything get in the way of what is familiar and comfortable. But change is also very necessary. It keeps us up to date and current. Let us embrace it and move forward."
