NOT A FISH STORY
Greg Szabo always enjoyed going boating with his grandfather on the Jersey Shore. It has been said that he started boating when he was in diapers and started boating on his own at the age of 13.
Greg Szabo joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary in 2009 in the 5th Northern District . In 2015 he transferred to Flotilla 10-10 in the First Southern District where he held the following offices- FSO-NS, FSO-MT, FSO-DV, and was elected Vice Commander of the Flotilla. He held several certifications including Boat Crew, Vessel Examiner, Recreational Boating Program Visitor, Fingerprint Technician, Instructor, as well as Public Education Instructor. He loves working with the Boy Scouts and held many About Boating Safely classes for them.
He received this Coast Guard Captain's 100 ton License in 2009 and he earned his Master of Tow Vessels Unlimited License Near Coastal, 200 ton Master Near Coastal, Able Bodied Seaman Unlimited, Radar Unlimited, Lifeboatman and Marine Radio Operator Permit in 2018 and began working for IUOE Local 25.
He has seen many things on his watch at the helm. In 2018 he saved 2 kayakers and in 2019 he assisted in rescuing another tug off the shores of New Jersey that had run aground.
He got married to a fellow Flotilla Auxiliarist, Amy Onufrick, in 2018, moved to Pennsylvania and had a baby boy . He works 28 days on and 14 days off so due to this grueling schedule he is unable to devote as much time to the Auxiliary as he would like to but he is always there to lend a hand or to attend the meetings.
He is a real asset to Flotilla 014-10-10.
