NOT A FISH STORY - VERA REED FSO-PA 014-10-10
DURING THE STAND-DOWN, ONE AUXILIARIST OFFERS A TOW
REG SZABO, an Auxiliary
member of FLotilla 014-10-10, got a surprise when he showed up for work on a Thursday. A dead humpback whale was being pushed onto his derrick by the tide.
Greg is the Captain of the tug Volunteer State that was working off the shore of Atlantic City, New Jersey. At the request of the EPA and New Jersey State Police, Szabo towed the 30-foot, 30,000-pound whale to shore. "Can't say my job doesn't keep me on my toes...this is a new one for me," said Captain Szabo
A tow line was connected to the smelly subject, and it was towed to the Brigantine Beach where the EPA and Marine Mammal Stranding Center members waited. Whale sightings have become increasingly common in New Jersey since their favorite food, bunker, have returned in large numbers in this area.
