Race Rock Reef is a dangerous set of rocks just southwest of Fisher’s Island, New York, at the mouth of Long Island Sound. Piloting in this spot can sometimes be very difficult due to waters rushing in from several different directions, creating swift and unpredictable currents. Add a jagged reef to the scenario and you have the recipe for potential problems, especially for a small boat with inexperienced mariners.

On this particular day, wind was from the NW at nearly 25 knots with seas on scene from 4-6 feet and a swift outgoing tide – conditions were certainly not good to be out fishing in a small aluminum boat.
