RESCUE

T WAS A TYPICAL SUMMER

Friday afternoon, the beginning of a long weekend out at Fisher’s Island providing search and rescue support for USCG Station New London. AUX 262634 (Pasquale) was just entering Silver Eel Cove when crew member Ken Williams picked up an emergency call on channel 16.

A fisherman was reporting a small aluminum vessel capsized in The Race, just outside Race Rock Reef with two persons in the water. They had been fishing when a large wave swamped and capsized their vessel, leaving it overturned with props pointing upward and still afloat. In the rough water, the victims had been separated from their vessel.

Luckily, they were wearing PFDs and had huddled together with a floating seat and gas tank from the boat.
