Several Coast Guard assets also joined the effort, the Coast Guard Cutter Penobscot Bay, a 140-foot icebreaker, the Coast Guard Cutter Wire, a 65-foot ice-breaking tug, and a Coast Guard aircraft was dispatched to assess the exact positions of the vessels.
Amtrak management put into place a speed reduction over the bridge while the engineering staff inspected its integrity. Several bridges were temporarily closed because of the potential for collisions from other vessels adrift.
The commercial tugs and the Coast Guard cutters worked to free the cruise ship from under the Livingston Avenue Bridge, and The Captain J.P. III was towed to Troy by two commercial tugboats.
