Over fishing - Empty Nets First Issue | Page 9

Another way overfishing can be destructive to ocean ecosystems is through pollution. Boats release oil and chemicals into the ocean, which can accumulate in high enough levels to effect marine life.

Fishing has also become one of the worlds most important industires, and milions of people depend on fishing for their livelyhoods. Cod industry collapse led to the loss of 40,000 jobs ("Overfishing," n.d.) Oceanscomprises of 2.7 million jobs and 258 billion to US GPD. 5.4 million jobs in 2010 were directly + indirectly supported by ocean, their total contribution estimated at $633 billion, 4.4% of the United States GDP.

Fshing is also a huge probelm in that commercial overifhsing has gone into impoverished areas where people depend on fish to feed their children and fish all the fish in that area. This leaves milions in developing coutnries with no food. Fish provides 1.5 billion people with 20 percent of their animal protein, and provides another 3 billion people with at least 15 percent (Pepgin, 2007)

Additoianlly, Seafood demand and scarcity leads to increase of price. This means that impoverished people who rely on the fish the most will not be able to afford it and become malnourished.("Overfishing," n.d.)
