The people are now happy that they are getting clean drinking water. They are grateful to the Govt and the Collector for they never thought that their demand for clean water would be met so soon. From a unsung vIllage Hamlet to IIt delHI Deepak’s flight from a small village in Kodekela in Pathalgaon to IIT Delhi speaks volumes of development and progress in the State of Chhattisgarh. Deepak was born in a modest farmer’s family where education was not a priority. His parents along with two elder sisters were unlettered. But despite no atmosphere for education Deepak was keen in studies. He used to walk 4 km to a small school every day. He had no clue as to what he was going to do when he grows. But he was self-motivated and almost always topped his class. His studies nearly got a road-block when he came to class eight. There were no further classes in his school. He managed to force his father to send him to higher secondary school in Tehsil Kun Kuri. Some teachers predicted that he would become an engineer. Deepak had no clue. But on the insistence and help of his teachers he managed to get admission in a state institution where free coaching was provided for admission to engineering colleges. Deepak took full advantage and managed to get 68th rank in ST category in JEE examination. And finally he reached IIT Delhi for studying Textile engineering. In his small native village an aeroplane was a mere flight of fancy. But he was actually aboard an aircraft for the first time when he cleared JEE and landed in Delhi. He is now on IIT and dreams to such youth is Nikhil Kanoje in village Latuva. Nikhil studied up to class 12 and also completed diploma in computer applications. But following financial constraints, he was later forced to drop out. To support the famil Nikhil began as a labourer on daily wages. But in the year 2015 Nikhil enrolled in Gramin Lok Seva Kandra and got an ID also. Through this he began providing digital services in Insurance, GIC, Aadhar Seeding, Banking and other e-services. This enabled him to a monthly income of Rs 13,500. Nikhil has also trained eight women’s groups and 55 youth in computers. It has helped literacy programme in his village. 26 February 2018 OutlOOk 49
