ADVENTURE TRAVEL|
THE MOTORCYCLE DIARIES OF COOKIE AND SIERRA
BY SIERRA FOSTER
Cookie and I are partners, vegans, and motorcycle
enthusiasts; I grew up on dirt bikes and Cookie started
her love for motorized two wheeled vehicles on a
scooter. We learned about our bikes as much as we
could before the journey, but the real teacher was the
trip. Having done surgery on almost every part of my
motorcycle along the way, we met so many wonderful
mechanics who taught us everything. Cookie was on
the trusty 2008 WR 250 R and I was on a 2000 DRZ
400 that had not seen mechanical love in almost 5
years, my first mistake.
USA:
Take off: My partner Cookie and I left on March 9, 2019, this was the week of serious
snowfall in Bend, I’m talking feet, I’m sure you all remember that storm that left Bend
covered in white fluffy snow. My lovely parents gave us a ride out of the snow and cold to
Death Valley (DV) where we could take off on our trip, finally!
Off we went on the Backcountry Discovery Route (BDR) in California from DV. This was
some of the most fun off-road riding and camping we had in the Northern hemisphere.
We met with my Great Aunt not far along on our trip, but it was good to see her; we also
met up with Cookie’s friend in Arizona just before we crossed the border into Mexico.
MEXICO:
Mexico was a delight, the people were wonderful, and the landscape has so much to offer,
I can’t wait to go back. We went to Copper Canyon, the only off-road we decided to take
in Mexico, and this is the home to the great running tribe depicted in the book “Born to
Run.” Urique was beautiful and the road in was a magnificent descent from the height of
the canyon wall to the depths of the valley, what an adventure that was.
