the family with you to Hawaii for
a week of surfing at the Volcom
Pipeline house. Is that the ulti-
mate gift you can give your family
and especially your dad Simon?
JE: Yes, I teased them that if I won
again that they don’t get to come
again. But of course they’re com-
ing. They have to. They deserve that
trip way more than I do. Thank you
Gerry for giving that opportunity to
so many people.
OOM: Most kids outpace their
parents athletically at some point,
but your dad was a pro surfer,
does he still show you up in the
ocean? Has your surfing improved
any?
JE: I think with surfing it’s not all
athletic. You have to be smart to
know what’s going on out there,
especially in Oregon. And of course
he just has years of knowledge that
he uses to his advantage. I’m for
sure improving, but it’s hard when
you’re only going every so often. I
would like to be really good at surf-
ing haha, maybe one day.
OOM: How do you do on the river
wave? Do you spend a lot of time
there?
JE: Sometimes I’ll dabble with the
river wave, not too often though.
The line can be crazy in the sum-
mer and I’d rather be skating or just
swimming in the river.
OOM: Do you ever hit the gym or
is your training strictly just doing
board sports?
JE: I always go to the gym for
around 3 months before snow-
boarding starts. I’ve had some ankle
injuries that really suck, and having
strength helps out so much with
preventing injuries as well as help-
ing your riding.
OOM: One of the things people
say about you is that you are a
very well rounded rider. You kill
it at rails (see Nitro’s film Of-
fline), you destroy parks, pipe,
rip powder, and have skills in the
backcountry. What part of your
riding do you think still has room
for progression?
JE: I think every aspect of my
snowboarding will always have
room for improvement. By no
means have I mastered any form of
snowboarding . Every day you’re
trying to get better in one way or
another.
OOM: Tell us something about
your gear that you are riding and
wearing. Are you at the point
