RESEARCH AND
CLINICAL TRIALS
Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Institute
and Soltero Cardiovascular Research Center
continued to support a robust roster of clinical
trials and studies in fiscal year 2019. In addition,
clinical trials were available for cardiovascular
patients in Fort Worth. A complete list of
research studies and clinical trials is available at
BaylorHeartHospital.com/ClinicalTrials. Highlights
from the year’s cardiovascular research
activities, including the Cardiac Imaging
Core Laboratory and the research institute’s
Distinguished Scholar, are noted in this section.

Baylor Scott & White Heart
and Vascular Institute
In June 2019, the American
Heart Association (AHA) notified
Peter A. McCullough, MD, MPH,
FACC, FACP, FAHA, FCCP, FNKF,
FNLA, FCRSA, medical director, Cardiovascular
Research and Education – Baylor Scott & White
Heart and Vascular Institute, and program
director, Cardiology Fellowship Program – Baylor
University Medical Center, part of Baylor Scott &
White Health, that a paper for which he was lead
co-author hit the top five percent of all scientific
publications tracked by Altimetrics, a company
that tracks online activity related to published
research.
The paper, “Cardiorenal Syndrome:
Classification, Pathophysiology, Diagnosis and
Treatment Strategies, A Scientific Statement
from the American Heart Association,”
published in the AHA’s Circulation, is an up-to-
date summary of key new knowledge in the
field of cardiorenal medicine and in particular
addresses the issue of combined heart and
kidney failure. Since its publication, the paper
has been downloaded more than 38,000 times.
Dr. McCullough believes this Baylor Scott & White
Health-led scientific statement on behalf of the
AHA is the most significant contribution to the
literature in fiscal year 2019 from Baylor Scott &
White Heart and Vascular Institute.
Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular
Institute research team – notable publications
While there were many notable published
articles in fiscal year 2019 coming from the
research teams on the Dallas campus, one was
led by Kristen M. Tecson, PhD, Biostatistician
at Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular
Institute. This published full-length manuscript
was a culmination of a study initiated in 2015 and
funded by the Cardiovascular Research Review
Committee at Baylor Scott & White Health.
Appearing in the prestigious journal, CardioRenal
Medicine, in May 2019, the article detailed
that after controlling for baseline and clinical
characteristics, patients with community-
acquired acute kidney injury (CA-AKI) were at
approximately twofold the risk of de novo heart
failure hospitalization compared with those
who did not have CA-AKI. Hence, detecting
CA-AKI may provide an opportunity for early
intervention at the primary care level to possibly
delay heart failure development.
