The medical expertise for this team of
interventional cardiologists, together with
cardiac surgeons, also includes echocardiology
specialists, advanced imaging experts and
electrophysiologists. As a dedicated heart and
vascular hospital, the expertise of the board-
certified cardiovascular anesthesiologists is
vitally important to overall patient outcomes.
These highly specialized anesthesiologists
are committed to heart and vascular work
in concert with the multidisciplinary team.
The ability to call upon anesthesiologists with
extensive experience in complex cases is one of
the differentiating factors for the Dallas campus
to other programs in the state or region.
Procedures performed as a part of the Dallas
program are catheter-based and less invasive
than open heart surgery for many patients. This
can result in better outcomes for the patients
along with a quicker recovery. In fiscal year 2019,
the program’s strong Center for Valve Disorders
and Aortic Center received patients from all over
the United States for specific conditions that
may not be readily treated in other areas.

Generally, structural heart disease programs
or centers focus on a wide range of disease
processes involving the heart’s valves, most
commonly the aortic and mitral valves, or
other non-coronary structures of the heart.
When it comes to this area of specialized care
for patients, Baylor Scott & White Heart and
Vascular Hospital – Dallas will bring additional
specialties into the discussion of treatment
options in order for patients to receive
individualized, multidisciplinary treatment
and care.

As the level of structural heart disease treatment
specialization is not readily available in the
rural areas of Texas, several interventional
cardiologists on the medical staff at Baylor Scott
& White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas
traveled to smaller communities in fiscal year
2019 to assist providers in learning more about
the various available treatment options. Of these
options, the MitraClip ® —the only device of its
kind commercially available—is growing in use for
treatment in patients with mitral regurgitation
and who are not candidates for surgical mitral
valve replacement.
