Cardiothoracic Surgery
As the cardiology programs realized growth in fiscal year 2018 , the cardiothoracic surgery program on the campus of Fort Worth also grew in volume . And , while cardiothoracic surgery on the Fort Worth campus is a program of Baylor Scott & White – Fort Worth , the leadership of both hospitals work closely to foster continuous quality improvement and excellence in patient outcomes with rigorous review of quality data and patient satisfaction throughout the various subspecialties for cardiovascular care .
The clinical teams , especially the cardiovascular dedicated nursing staff , understand the importance of a seamless continuum of care and collaborated on many complex cardiovascular patients in fiscal year 2018 . In fact , the teams worked closely in fiscal year 2018 for patients who received Impella ® , a kind of LVAD that pumps blood in order to sustain the heart either short-term during a procedure or for up to seven days . Caring for the most complex cardiovascular patients in fiscal year 2018 , the teams worked together for 13 patients who were deemed appropriate for Extracorporeal Life Support ( ECMO ).

ECMO Patients ( FY18 ) 13

“ This past fiscal year has been a year of rapid growth for cardiovascular surgery services as evidenced by the robust CABG volumes and growing number of cases for mitral valve and aortic surgeries . We realized a total of 13 ECMOs and are growing in our left ventricular assist device capabilities . Additional cardiothoracic surgeons became members of the medical staff and we increased the number of outreach clinics . As the western frontier of the healthcare system , we continue to expand as does the population served .”
