Adult Congenital Heart Disease
Congenital heart problems are the most common birth defects, and can range from
simple to complex. Because of their increased risk of cardiac problems, adults with
congenital heart defects require special care. In conjunction with the Center for Adult
Congenital Heart Disease, cardiac surgeons on the medical staff at Baylor University
Medical Center have the expertise needed to help adults with these conditions. Surgical
treatment options for the most common types of congenital heart problems include atrial
septal defect repair, ventricular septal defect repair and tricuspid valve surgery. The diverse
team of specialists works with the primary care physician and congenital heart disease
cardiologist to provide personalized treatment to care for each patient’s unique needs.
Baylor Heart and Vascular
Services at Dallas surgical
procedures also include:
• Off-pump bypass surgery
• Atrial septal defect repair
(ASD) closure
• Ventricular septal defect
(VSD) closure
• Surgery for infective
endocarditis
• Root repair/replacement and
dissections
As a congenital heart disease specialist on the medical staff
at Baylor University Medical Center, I often work closely
with cardiac surgeons. The multidisciplinary team approach
for patients is key to their quality of life as adults living with
congenital heart issues.
