On and off the Canvas
OutBoise: What was your most challenging
piece?
Suzie: “The most challenging pieces I’ve
ever had to make were- hands down- My BFA
sculpture show pieces that I made for my dear
friend, Adriano, who recently passed away at 21
years old. They were oversized sculptures made
of wood, foam, lamination, tinsel and glitter
that explored life, metamorphosis, growth, and
death. They were bright colored, covered in glitter and tinsel and had real preserved butterflies
covering them- (that we raised from caterpillars
just for the show.) It was such a hard process
to create rainbow-colored, ‘playful’ sculptures
during my time of grieving and loss, but it definitely helped me deal with things in a healthy
way. “
OutBoise: What are you most passionate
about?
Suzie: “I hate waste. I hate what people consider as waste. I hate how much garbage we
all throw away as a culture. I call myself an
organized hoarder because I try to save/ reuse/
use everything including scraps and things that
most people would consider garbage. I still see
the beauty in the materials. I try to draw parallels to marginalized members of society like
women, members of LGBT, refugees etc in my
art through the materials I choose but I never
know if people are really getting the meanings
or if it gets lost in the campiness.”
