THIS FOREST ~ by Michele Pollock
This forest was once clear cut. This forest grew back, but changed. This forest has stood 100 years. This forest towers with oaks and hickories. This forest whips into a frenzy during storms. This forest closes around me when I enter it. This forest cradles mushrooms and mosses deep in its heart. This forest is worth more than its market price in board-feet. This forest curves with paths made by deer. I can follow them. This forest contains more greens than we have words for. This forest hires turkey vultures to clean up its messes. This forest records its history in tree rings. This forest wants to be loved – not by us, but by bees and salamanders and opossums. This forest grieves after tornadoes and hailstorms. This forest flutters with moths and bats in the summer dark. This forest is included in a deed with my name on it, but this forest will never be owned. This forest remembers the gentle feet of an ancient people. This forest has seasonal creeks that run with rain. This forest unfurls with fern fronds each spring. This forest dies back each autumn, holds its breath each winter, bursts forth again each spring. This forest might hold the secret to everything.
