On the heels of fashion week , here is what ’ s trending for holiday parties and New Year ’ s Eve 2016 . Everything from statement furs to velvet can be seen on the runway . However , this season ’ s game changer is the ruffle and looking forward it will carry into Spring 2017 .

The ruffle flourish enhances dresses , sleeves and even otherwise sedate trousers . It adds softness to tailoring , movement to minimalist offerings , and a sense of charm and drama which is essential to surviving the holidays . “ Most women shed their ruffly party frocks by the age of 12 ,” explained Metropolitan Fashion Week Director Vano Kimmel . “ But ruffles are both fabulously frilly and unfathomably fashionable .” Designer David Koma gives an edgy look to the ruffle by offering a drop sleeve ruffle top in leather as a holiday essential . The tiered ruffle skirt is a holiday staple that can be dressed up or down with the right pairings as seen by Givenchy and Brandon Maxwell . “ A new spin on the ruffle skirt is wearing it in metallic denim ,” said Kimmel . The epitome of grown-up elegance is an organza ruffle dress with flat boots as seen in Jason Wu ’ s holiday collection .
Velvet , bell sleeves , and corsets makeup a modern day uniform for all your holiday parties . Both Gucci and Channel showed rich velvet dresses with bell sleeves and metallic trimmings on their runway . “ The velvet dress never goes out of fashion ,” said Kimmel . “ What makes it modern is the cut and accessories .” Try wearing a corset over a straight velvet dress with boots and long drop earrings , as seen by Vanessa Seward .
