People felt very strange about the cat’s arrival, because there weren’t any animals before. Why did the cat come into the prison? People were very confused. But prisoners didn’t let the cat leave or keep away from it. Instead, they responded to the cat gradually. Every yard period, a group of prisoners gathered there, they stood around talking and took turns petting the cat. And sometimes, bowls of milk and water appeared, along with bread. But the cat didn’t eat or drink anything. Clearly, the cat was sick. Then, many prisoners helped it struggle with its illness. Luckily, with these prisoners’ help, the cat soon became more energetic and healthy. And they could always see it jump again and again. It seems that it was very happy. People said: “that cat came to the right place. He is getting treated like a king.” That was true. However, before the cat’s coming, people never talked to each other. Though they had something important to say, they only said several words. Usually, they were very distant towards each other, and there were no smiles on their faces. Now, smiles appeared on their faces. Their relationships changed. Even the officer stood in the group—not chasing people away, but watching and seeming to enjoy it along with the prisoners. All of the changes were due to the cat’s coming. —A cat influenced a prison.
