increase in net income over the past two years, which
would’ve been impossible otherwise.
- A shareholder commented “awesome dividends and
settlement trust.”
- A shareholder cautioned against paying more to
employees and professional fees than its shareholders as
other companies have.
- Another suggestion asked OC if it would consider
a piece of property for a canine cemetery in the
growing community of Unalaska. The board promised
to discuss this.
- Another community member asked the board to consider
a community garden plot somewhere on the island where
everybody could get together and work on a garden. The
board answered that would discuss the idea for
next summer.
- A shareholder asked about the LSA cannery.
Management answered that the Aleutian Island
Fish Company had assigned their lease to Aleutian
Expeditors, and that any issues with the last lease have
been taken care of.
- One attendee spoke about hearing from customers that
OC doesn’t treat them right. Examples were given – a
situation where OC wanted to raise rents for a local
building, a rumor that OC had asked a local bar to
pay $12,000 in two weeks, and a tenant being evicted
with only a three-day notice and a generic letter. The
shareholder stated that these were rumors, but if true,
asked OC to do things differently.
The shareholder continued, stating they had had heard of
racism against white people at OC and that this was wrong
if it was true.
The board committed to looking into these issues and
especially the racism. The board chair said that any racism
will not be tolerated, and that OC would continue to
communicate with shareholders about these issues once
they have been looked into. Management discussed the
fact that OC has a leasing process with standard letters.
Additionally, with leases between OC and its tenants, most
communications are limited to the tenant themselves,
but OC can answer more generally as the owner. OC
uses standard legal notices and that’s to protect the
shareholders and OC’s assets.
The leadership team all agreed there’s always room for
improvement, that all of the questions and ideas were
noted, and would be taken seriously. All comments were
points well taken.
