Sand Crocus

Despite its English name , the Sand Crocus is not a true crocus . Although it belongs to the same family as the crocuses ( the Iris family , Iridaceae ), it is placed in the genus Romulea , which includes some eighty species from the Mediterranean to Arabia and Africa , with an especially high diversity in South Africa . This distribution is not surprising as the floras of the Mediterranean and the Cape region in South Africa share many affinities , including a high diversity of plants with bulbs and corms .
This particular species is distributed in Iberia and Northwest Africa . It is localised in Gibraltar but it can be common in areas where it grows , especially around Europa Point , Windmill Hill Flats and the southern slopes of the Upper Rock . The flowers of the Sand Crocus are very beautiful , as indeed are those of so many members of the Iris family .
The species flowers during the latter part of the calendar winter , in February and March , although in the Mediterranean spring is well underway by late March . Plants in the Botanic Gardens were collected in Gibraltar as seeds and propagated at The Alameda , or rescued as bulbs from habitat destruction at Europa Point .
Romulea clusiana Asturnatura
A pesar de su nomenclatura en inglés ( Sand Crocus ), esta planta no constituye una variedad genuina de las plantas crocus . Aunque pertenece a la misma familia ( las iridaceae ), está catalogada como una de las Romulea , grupo que aglutina a unas ochenta especies distribuidas desde el Mediterráneo hasta Arabia y África , teniendo especial diversidad en Sudáfrica . Semejante distribución no sorprende porque las floras del Mediterráneo y de la región del Cabo de Sudáfrica comparten muchas similitudes entre las que se incluyen una alta diversidad de plantas bulbáceas y cormos . La romulea clusiana está presente en la península Ibériba y el noroeste de África . Habita en Gibraltar y no es difícil hallarla en Europa Point , Windmill Hill Flats y las pendientes meridionales de la parte alta del Peñón . Sus flores , como las de tantas otras especies de las iridaceae , son de gran belleza . Esta especie florece durante la parte postrera del invierno , en febrero y marzo , aunque para finales de marzo la estación primaveral está ya bien avanzada en la región mediterránea . De los Jardines Botánicos se recogieron semillas para plantarlas en la Alameda y también se rescataron bulbos que corrían peligro de supervivencia en Europa Point .
