DENMARK TO BUILD WORLD ’ S FIRST “ ENERGY ISLAND ”
Denmark will embark on a £ 25 billion ( 28 billion Euro ) project to build the world ’ s first artificial ‘ energy island ’ in the North Sea .
The island will initially have an area of 120,000sq metres ( about the size of 18 football pitches ) and be the primary hub for 200 giant offshore wind turbines . The hope is that the project will later be expanded to three times this size .
Located 80km offshore , it is the largest construction project in Danish history and will be 51 % owned by the state and the remainder by the private sector . The power generated on the island will produce enough energy for 3 million homes and will also supply electricity to other neighbouring countries .
The project forms part of a cross-party deal on energy policy struck in June 2020 , in which the government agreed to build the artificial energy island , as well as a smaller wind farm off the coast of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea that will also supply energy to Germany , Belgium and the Netherlands .
Denmark ’ s ambitious climate act has committed to a 70 % reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and to become carbon neutral by 2050 . 50 %
of Denmark ’ s energy already comes from renewable sources , 47 % of which comes from wind and the remainder from solar . Denmark has been a pioneer in wind-generated power since the 1970s and was the first country in the world to build an offshore windfarm in 1991 .
Last December , the country also made the landmark decision to halt all new oil and gas exploration in the North Sea .
