In the heart of La Línea de la Concepción, there’ s a park that holds far more than trees and pathways. It holds a story, one shaped by history, by hardship, and above all, by hope.
During a visit to the park with a group of schoolchildren, Eladio, one of the founding members of Los Locos del Parque, shared a powerful journey through time; the story of Parque Princesa Sofía, one that we had to share with you all.
" This park was born when the border with Gibraltar was closed," Eladio began, standing among the greenery. " La Línea needed a place of joy, social encounters, freedom and natural space and so they built this. There was a lagoon, ducks and geese, wooden trains for children, it was a paradise. I even took my First Communion photo right here in this park."
For a time, the park thrived, a breathing natural heart for the city. But when the border reopened years later, life shifted, fences went up and neglect crept in. Durante una visita al parque con un grupo de escolares, Eladio, uno de los miembros fundadores de Los Locos del Parque, compartió con nosotros un emotivo viaje en el tiempo: la historia del Parque Princesa Sofía, una historia que teníamos que compartir con todos vosotros.
« Este parque nació cuando se cerró la frontera con Gibraltar », comenzó Eladio, de pie entre la vegetación. « La Línea necesitaba un lugar de alegría, de encuentro social, de libertad y de espacio natural, y por eso lo construyeron. Había una laguna, patos y gansos, trenes de madera para los niños, era un paraíso. Yo incluso me hice la foto de la Primera Comunión aquí, en este parque ».
