Parte del antiguo patio de recreo se ha convertido en un pequeño bosque mediterráneo . Se retiró el asfalto y se sustituyó por tierra y plantas , incluidos alcornoques y otros árboles , arbustos y flores , aportando un espacio verde muy necesario a una zona llena de hormigón y edificios .

RECORD BREAKING YEAR FOR DAM REMOVAL IN EUROPE
2021 was a record-breaking year for the removal of river barriers , dams and weirs across Europe , with at least 239 removed across 17 countries .
According to
Dam Removal Europe , a coalition of seven environmental organisations including the WWF and Rewilding Europe , Spain removed the most , with 108 barriers of varying sizes taken out of its rivers . In its annual report , Dam Removal Europe said , “ The Iberian country keeps removing barriers at an increasing pace , demonstrating once again the importance of a law that enforces the decommissioning of obsolete dams ”.
Both small and large river barriers , including dams and weirs , negatively impact the health of river systems by blocking fish migration routes and preventing the free-flowing movement of sediments and nutrients through river systems . These obstacles lead to the loss of breeding areas and reduced numbers of fish species , which , in turn , affects other species such as otters and birds .
It is estimated that there are more than 1 million artificial river barriers across Europe , many of which are over 100 years old . At least 150,000 of these barriers are completely obsolete and serve no purpose .
The report by Dam Removal Europe recognises that the topic of dam removal “ is still seen as very controversial in many countries ” but that “ an increase of 137 % of barriers removed compared to the previous year confirms the growing movement and interest in restoring rivers in Europe ”. Last year , Portugal , Montenegro , and Slovakia removed their first dams and Finland dismantled a functioning hydropower dam .
Since the project began , 4984 dams have been removed across Europe and thanks to additional funding from organisations such as the
Open Rivers Programme , 2022 should be even more successful .
