licy . China is dominating renewable energy installation , followed by the United States , Brazil , and the EU .
Other projections show that renewables , together with nuclear power , will provide most of the world ’ s energy by 2030 and will dominate global capacity by 2050 , particularly solar p . v and wind power .
This jump in clean energy spending is , however , predominantly taking place in more advanced economies and China . Skyrocketing fuel prices and energy security concerns mean that less advanced markets are being left behind , and are investing more in fossil fuels , including coal . A few developing nations are currently bucking this trend and charging ahead with green energy investments , with Morocco and India leading the way . Renewable energy projects in Morocco now account for 40 % of their installed energy capacity and are due to reach 50 % by 2030 .
Deforestation
As a major driver of climate change and biodiversity loss , halting and reversing deforestation is one of the world ’ s biggest challenges .
Forests currently cover 31 % of the globe ’ s land surface ( approximately 4.06 billion hectares ), but each year , around 10 million hectares of forest are cut down . The world lost 420 million hectares of forest from deforestation between 1990 – 2020 .
The Forest Declaration Assessment was the first report published to measure progress made following deforestation commitments at COP26 .
“ To be on course to halt deforestation completely by 2030 , a 10 % annual reduction is needed . However , deforestation rates around the world decline only modestly , in 2021 , by 6.3 % compared to the 2018-20 baseline . In the humid tropics , loss of irreplaceable primary forest decreased by only 3.1 %”.
Although this shows that deforestation is slowing , we will miss targets to halt deforestation by the end of the decade if efforts are not urgently accelerated . There is also concern that the destruction of primary tropical forests , rich in carbon and biodiversity , only fell by 3 %.
At COP26 , 145 countries pledged to end deforestation by the end of the decade and without halting the destruction of forests , limiting warming to 1.5 º C will be impossible . cambio climático .
