fulness depends on bearing in mind the question that prompted it and the conditions that have been excluded. Filtering does not mean simplifying the system to the point of turning it into something else, but rather recognising that certain questions require a narrower scale of observation.
Learning to visualise also involves accepting that seeing less can be a way of understanding better, provided one knows what has been left out and why.
The city was not in any of the three images
The three representations retain exactly the same structure, but none on its own offers a definitive picture of Ciudad Delta. In one, the thickness of the connections corresponds to the volume of journeys and the colour distinguishes the modes of transport; in another, that same thickness expresses total emissions; in the third, emissions per thousand journeys. The fourteen nodes remain in the same positions, the twenty-two connections continue to link the same locations, and Parada Parque retains in all of them the size derived from its high level of intermediation. This consistency allows for precise comparison of the images and, at the same time, reveals the extent to which each one constructs a different hierarchy within a system that has not changed.
The issue then becomes clearer. The data do not contain a definitive visualisation waiting for someone to discover the right combination of shapes, colours and sizes. Long before the design stage, decisions have already been made about which elements count as nodes, which relationships deserve to become edges, which quantities are compared, which should be normalised, which properties are made visible and which part of the system is temporarily left out of the representation. Each of these choices opens up certain possibilities for interpretation whilst limiting others, so that visualisation also involves establishing the conditions under which a structure can be analysed.
This ability to construct different interpretations does not make visualisation an arbitrary field. Graphic freedom remains bound by strict discipline, because every visible property must retain a recognisable relationship with the data that produces it. The thickness of a connection must correspond to a specific magnitude; the size of a node must be reconmo tiempo, dificultar cualquier interpretación precisa.
