Learning to ask fewer questions
A comprehensive network allows us to recognise general patterns, although that very abundance can become an obstacle when the question requires us to isolate specific relationships. Ciudad Delta therefore ceases to function solely as an image of the whole and begins to behave as a structure capable of responding to increasingly specific conditions. The visualisation retains the full complexity of the system, but attention can be temporarily shifted to one part of it without losing sight of the fact that the rest continues to exist.
By selecting the connections relating to the car, the initial twenty-two links are reduced to five. A second condition further restricts the result, retaining only those connections where emissions intensity lies between 240 and 250 kilograms per thousand journeys. The network ultimately identifies two corridors, Mirador – Industrial and Este – Industrial, which simultaneously meet the transport mode and environmental range defined in the search.
The operation seems straightforward, but it introduces a significant change in the way we work with the network. Up to that point, the visualisations had kept the entire system visible and allowed patterns to be discovered by comparing all its elements. Filtering partially reverses this logic and starts from an explicit question to narrow the field of observation. The network ceases to display everything it contains and begins to show only that which meets a specific condition.
This capability takes on particular importance when the number of nodes and connections increases and the visualisation risks becoming an overloaded surface where accumulation takes the place of interpretation. Displaying all elements can convey a sense of exhaustiveness whilst, at the same time, hindering any precise interpretation.
Filters allow us to work with subsets defined by verifiable criteria and to focus our attention on relationships which, within the complete set, might otherwise be lost amongst hundreds or thousands of connections.
This reduction, however, also alters what can be seen. Each filter imposes a limit and relegates part of the network to the background, so its usepermite localizar el impacto acumulado; relacionarlas con el volumen de desplazamientos muestra dónde esa movilidad resulta más intensiva ambientalmente.
Aprender a preguntar menos
