function is to keep the variables under control and ensure that every change in the representation can be clearly attributed to a specific analytical decision.
The analysis was carried out using Cytoscape, a tool originally developed to study complex biological networks and now applied to a wide variety of systems, provided they can be expressed in terms of entities, relationships and attributes. Its usefulness in this case lies in the ability to retain the same network whilst different variables are successively brought to the fore. The structure remains stable, and what changes is the perspective from which it is observed: mobility, structural position, total emissions or emission intensity. This continuity allows the different representations to be compared without confusing the changes produced by the data with those introduced by a new arrangement of the network.
The first city
The first representation focuses on mobility. The thickness of the connections corresponds to the daily volume of journeys, and the colour distinguishes between bus, car, bicycle and tram, whilst the shapes allow one to recognise neighbourhoods, stops and stations. The source table thus begins to take on a geometry, and certain relationships become more prominent than others. Estación Central immediately emerges as one of the major hubs of Ciudad Delta, surrounded by numerous connections and traversed by some of the network’ s busiest flows. Its prominence is consistent with the activity it concentrates, although this first impression still reveals little about the role each node plays within the whole.
To explore this further, two structural properties were calculated. Degree records the number of direct connections for each node, whilst betweenness centrality estimates the frequency with which an element features in the shortest paths linking other areas of the network. Estación Central once again occupies the top position, with seven connections and the highest betweenness centrality value, but the next result significantly alters the hierarchy suggested by the initial image. Parada Parque, linked to only two nodes, achieves the second-highest intermediation value in the whole of Ciudad Delta.
The explanation lies in its location.
