Sandra Brooks reflects on the importance of advocating for occupational therapy in eating disorders services .
T he awareness of the impact occupational therapy can have on individuals with eating disorders is steadily growing within the academic literature , as well as across mental health services .
In this article , I want to reflect on how our team re-established occupational therapy into an outpatient eating disorders services in a mental health hospital in North London . I hope to share the highlights of having co-created multiple care pathways for individuals with eating disorders in the outpatient setting , as well as share barriers to best practice that must be considered while advocating for the highest quality of care for our patients .
I then hope to plant the seed for occupational therapists to fearlessly pave evidence-based pathways in mental health services , as we did in the outpatients and the day programme service .
This work has not only been enriching for my day-to-day learning , but has also influenced patients and my previous colleagues in a positive and impactful way .
Developing creative and innovative practice
I specialised in occupational therapy around eating disorders for its potential to facilitate recovery and wellness for individuals .
