Return to practice
I am excited about my next career chapter . I may be 51 , but as my confidence re-emerges , I am reminded there is a lot I will be able to offer in my next role .”

Return to practice

Feature the RCOT website . I looked at the comprehensive offerings from Health Education England ( HEE ) and considered universities that offered return to practice courses .
I then put pen to paper and started my learning plan , utilising both the career development framework on the RCOT website and the capabilities audit .
I need to carry out at least 30 days of updating before I can apply to re-join the HCPC register . This can be a combination of supervised practice , formal and private study , but the self-directed ( private ) study cannot be more than 15 out of the 30 days .
My biggest challenge was where to carry out supervised practice . In September 2022 , I saw a Tweet from RCOT , advertising a 20-day , virtual return to practice internship with them , sponsored by HEE . I applied , I was interviewed in October , was offered the post and started in November .
As I write this , I am rebooting ! I have completed day 15 of the internship at RCOT and the opportunities so far have been incredible . I have had the chance to meet so many knowledgeable people . Everyone has been so welcoming , made me feel that I belong and that my skills and experiences count .
My learning plan has been added to every day as I uncover the current issues within occupational therapy , the new strategy , the diversity of workplace roles and new initiatives . While my career break is short , I did not appreciate how much our profession has evolved .
Since I started the internship , I have tried to make the most of every opportunity . It feels like a lifetime ago since I was reviewing evidence to inform my practice , yet I am completing literature reviews , ably aided by RCOT library personnel , discovering the latest information that will affect my work in the future .
I have presented with colleagues from HCPC , HEE and RCOT on a return to practice online seminar and am writing a blog for HCPC .
I started this part of my journey with my learning plan , endless enthusiasm and a determination to re-register as an occupational therapist . There is no single point to refer to in order to discover what you have missed .
The whole return to practice process is about being able to state that you meet the required standards of practice for the HCPC . It is flexible .
Everybody wants to see people return to practice , with the talents they gained during their years off the HCPC register . The internship has given me the opportunity to reflect on those skills , knowledge and experience , in addition to considering the gaps .
I am excited about my next career chapter . I may be 51 , but as my confidence re-emerges , I am reminded there is a lot I will be able to offer in my next role .”
It has been a boost to my confidence and I will be forever grateful to HEE and RCOT for providing this opportunity . It would be wonderful to see Northern Ireland , Scotland and Wales offering this type of internship too .
I am excited about my next career chapter . I may be 51 , but as my confidence re-emerges , I am reminded there is a lot I will be able to offer in my next role . Thank you to everyone along this journey that has helped me to remember and realise this , especially my supervisor , Anne Keen and colleagues at RCOT . All of you have shaped my return to practice journey in immeasurable ways .
If there is anyone out there considering returning to practice , just do it . There are so many people that will help you on your journey .
