RCOT publishes new quick guides on occupational therapy and Long Covid
RCOT has collaborated with occupational therapists and members of Long Covid support groups to develop two new quick guides on the role of occupational therapy in supporting adults , children and young people to manage and recover from Long Covid .
Occupational therapists are working extremely hard to support adults , children and young people affected by Long Covid in a range of settings , and RCOT hopes that these new guides will support them in their practice .
The symptoms of Long Covid are complex and wide-ranging and many people report that their ability to manage day-to-day tasks is impacted .
Lauren Walker , RCOT professional adviser said : ‘ Occupational therapists have the ideal range of skills to help people manage and recover from the aspects of the condition that most affect their daily lives .
‘ The evidence base for Long Covid is still very limited and we will continue to learn more about the condition and the most effective ways to address it over time . We collaborated with a range of RCOT members and
representatives of Long Covid peer support groups to produce the guides and were able to draw on both lived experience and clinical expertise to develop the content .
‘ We are very grateful to all those who worked with us for their invaluable contributions .’
Kirsty Stanley from the Long Covid Support Employment Group and Long Covid Kids says that the work highlighted the safety and quality concerns the Long Covid community had when engaging with services .
‘ These guides were an opportunity to provide clear guidance for all occupational therapists on how to best support the Long Covid community . We are all learning together , with the evidence and research changing all the time .’
She urges occupational therapists to listen to the people they are working with : ‘ We espouse in our practice that the person is the expert in their own health and life , and with Long Covid it has truly been the case . Do read this guide , but above all listen to the person in front of you . In this they probably will know more .
