The first celebrated event in 2015, was a night in the holy month of Ramadan; it was entitled
‘Ten Nights.’ The event included religious and entertaining activities, which were very much
enjoyed by the students and families. The event program included a quiz and a special part
for children.
For the Eid celebration, OSSV organized a big outdoor gathering for the students where they
exchanged greetings and many traditional dishes were served. They felt just as if they were
at home among their relatives and beloved ones. Such gatherings and activities indeed
embody the Islamic Arab cultural identity of Omani people. OSSV didn’t miss the chance to
represent the science stream. It had organized a ‘Scientific Evening’ where students
discussed different topics in chemistry, physics, technology and medicine. Some of the
presenters showed some experiments related to their fields of study.
Aiming to improve the event management skills of its members, the OSSV had also organized
a training workshop.
Several sport, leisure and competitions events were also organized and conducted beside
the above mentioned gatherings, events, and workshops. These events aimed to entertain
students and lower their pressure of studying. The OSSV also organized a well attended
event called ‘OSSV Talks’ which was inspired by the well-known ‘Ted Talks’ programme.
Many Omani students in Victoria participated in this event. They presented several topics
relating to Omani students studying overseas, but there were also topics of interest to gener-
al audience.
In November2015, as all Omani people, the OSSV celebrated Oman’s National Day. An exhibi-
tion entitled ‘Discover Oman’ was held, which included various sections that showed Oman’s
historical and modern legacy. One of these sections was an array of photographs captured by
Omani photographers signifying Oman’s geography, nature and lifestyle. The exhibition had
attracted many people from different backgrounds and communities. Attendees were given
a lot of information which gave a very good impression about Oman, its culture and people.
In the same year, OSSV also organized two special events to welcome the new Omani
students and introduce them to each other and to the senior students and familiarize them
with some aspects of life in Australia.
The OSSV has always been keen, through its different events and activities, to create a warm
and welcoming atmosphere to its members and the wider community of Omani students in
the state of Victoria. The OSSV had achieved many accomplishments and thus gained an
outstanding reputation among Omani students in Victoria, Australia and beyond. The story
of the Omani Students Society in Victoria is indeed a tale of ongoing success and accomplish-
ments.
