HAND & UPPER EXTREMITY SERVICE
The UAB Department of Orthopaedic Surgery ’ s hand and upper extremity service features experienced physicians and surgeons who specialize in disorders , instability , and injuries of the hand , wrist , forearm , elbow , and shoulder . We managed over 5,690 patient visits in FY2022 , encompassing more than 1,164 cases .
Our dynamic team treats conditions such as osteoarthritis , fractures , rotator cuff tears , overuse syndromes like impingement golfer and tennis elbow , rheumatoid arthritis , lupus , carpal tunnel and cubital tunnel syndromes , as well as physical birth disorders . We provide care for a wide range of hand issues including trauma , sports injuries , adult and pediatric plexus injuries , congenital hand , spasticity , and thoracic outlet syndrome , using techniques such as microvascular surgery and reconstructive hand surgery .

Other services include custom fixed and moveable splints , wound care and scar management , and evaluations of physical function to rate patients ’ movement capabilities . We also provide an array of condition management services , such as counseling on physical activity , instruction on protecting joints and conserving energy , exercise therapy , nutritional counseling , and help with modifying activities and environments at home , work , and school to be more ergonomic .

• Drs . Erin Ransom and Richard Meyer updated the chapter on thoracic outlet syndrome in the wellknown Green ’ s Operative Hand Surgery published in 2022 .
• Dr . Mohammad Morsy , delivered a lecture on scaphoid fractures during the January 2022 meeting of the American Association for Hand Surgery .
• Founded by Dr . Erin Ransom and fellow community hand surgeons , the first annual meeting of the Gulf Coast Hand Society was held at the 2022 Alabama Orthopedic Society meeting .
