Neuro Orthopedics

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
Our Neuro Orthopedic team treats conditions that arise from neuromuscular conditions and provide care from infancy through adulthood. Our research aims to improve and innovate surgical treatment to enhance functional capabilities while simultaneously reducing patient rehabilitative burden. In collaboration with the Center for Gait and Movement Analysis( CGMA), our research aims to evaluate the impact of surgical and non-surgical interventions on clinical outcomes and gait performance in individuals with cerebral palsy and other neuromuscular conditions over the lifespan.
RESEARCH HIGHLIGHT
“ Hip Instability in Children with Spinal Muscular Atrophy: A Retrospective Study”
Spinal muscular atrophy( SMA) is a severe neuromuscular disorder, and while new therapies have improved survival and mobility, hip instability remains a major concern. This study reviewed 45 children with SMA types 1 to 3 and found hip subluxation occurs earlier and progresses faster in type 1. Findings highlight the need for proactive orthopedic management and adoption of hip surveillance protocols to improve quality of life.
