/E 1946 PRESENTATION BOOK WITH FIRST ISSUES
& SURCHARGED ESSAYS ................................. PH $10,000
Attractive blue hardcover tri-fold Presentation Book with red
velvet ties, with bound pages inside. Book includes a single
stamp affixed to each page, plus mint never hinged FULL PANE
in glassine sleeve, for the American Military surcharges (Scott
#55-60) and first Liberation Issue (Scott #61-66). Additional
typewritten pages give technical information & quantities
printed for the issues, in both English and Korean. What makes
this book so RARE is the inclusion of five ESSAYS for
surcharged Japanese stamps not issued by the American
authorities (20ch on 20s, 50ch on 50s, 1w on 15s, 1w on ¥1
and 10w on 8s). Each surcharge in a strip of 5 affixed to page.
Footnoted in Scott at $1,200 per stamp ($6,000 per strip) and
listed in KPC catalog as U4-8 at 2 million won per stamp.
Book text states that one sheet (of 100) of each was produced,
meaning there can be no more than 20 of these books since
each book contains a strip of 5 for each of the five essays. A
single set of 5 essays sold earlier this year in Hong Kong for
$2,400, so some books have been broken up. In very fine
condition, kept in the family of an American Army Captain
who worked in the Department of Communications during the
occupation. A similar book sold in our November auction for
$9,000. (KPC Won58000000=US$54649) Cat $37,000.
