(1036 var) 1958 LINCOLN 4¢ RED VIOLET, POSTAL COUNTERFEIT SHEET ............................................. PH $3000 Extremely RARE complete sheet of 100 postal counterfeits on thin, shiny paper with glossy gum (perf 12½) with lower left ‘plate number’ 26401. Stamps were produced by offset lithography rather than line engraving and were supposedly prepared from coil stamps (although this doesn’t make sense with plate number and electric eye markings). Few trivial edge perforation separations and one stamp with tear (right margin, row 5). Absolute show-stopping item with tremendous appeal. MINT never hinged, but some spotting on gum, as normally encountered. Catalog is for plate block and singles. Cat $8200. $125 Top plate block of 8 (black plate #F 20452, red #F 20489). Nice shifted cross, with south & east arms into nurse. Fresh, MINT never hinged, very fine. 2273 2280 Estimate 2279 USA Errors, Freaks & Oddities, cont. 2272 2279 2281 (1203a) 1962 HAMMARSKJOLD ORIGINAL INVERT ERROR ON FIRST DAY COVER .............................. PH $2000 Extremely fresh unofficial first day cover of the REAL Hammarskjold invert error. Stamp tied with clear Oct. 23, 1962, Brooklyn, NY, Vanderveer Sta. machine cancel (11:30 am). Reverse of cover bears signature and rubber stamped address creator added later (Edwin Friedman of Rockville Centre, NY). Stamp itself, of course, is ORIGINAL Hammarskjold Invert error, which, was reprinted by the U.S. Post Office, now known as Scott #1204 (‘Special Printing’). The intentional error was released Nov 16, in a successful effort to destroy the market value of the inverts discovered by Leonard Sherman. Scott lists and values covers with the more common ‘First Day of Issue’ cancel. Brooklyn covers are much scarcer. Extremely fine showpiece! (2013 Sismondo cert) Cat $300 0.
