Course Description:
GCSE English Literature develops students’ ability to critically analyse a range of literary texts, enhancing their appreciation of literature, historical context and writer’ s craft.
Students will study Shakespeare, a 19th-century novel, modern prose and poetry, exploring themes, characters, and language. They will develop skills in interpretation, comparison, and evaluation, while learning to construct wellsupported arguments.
Assessment consists of two exams:
Paper 1: Shakespeare and the 19th-century novel 40 % 1h 45m
Paper 2: Modern texts and poetry, including unseen poems 60 % 2h 15m
Students will analyse extracts and write extended responses, demonstrating their understanding of themes, context and literary techniques.
