Jacques-Cartier National Park . Devoid of fancy lotions and upscale amenities , this spa experience involves a sequence of hot surfaces , cold pools and hot tubs . Guests move between the three environments in a respectful silence , until their skin tingles and the day ’ s stress is washed away . We venture from the heat of a wet sauna to a chilly plunge pool that feels impossibly cold at first dip . Gradually , we build up the courage for complete immersion before making a beeline for the hot tub . Submerged in the bubbles we inhale the fragrant scent of pine trees , absorb the sound of rushing river water , and watch the light change on the river as evening slowly descends . We leave in a zen-like state , deeply relaxed , purified , and ready to venture on .
QUÉBEC ’ S KITCHEN GARDEN
The next day ’ s journey is on Île d ’ Orléans , fondly known as the fruit and vegetable basket of Québec City . Just twenty minutes ’ drive away , the island is a favourite weekend destination for local families who come to pick strawberries , buy fresh asparagus and shop for jam , wine , and gourmet foods . The bridge between mainland and island marks a distinct change of pace , and the best way to enjoy the island ’ s pleasures is to drive slowly , stop often for tastings , and take time to savour the combination of beautiful river views and lovingly restored farmhouses , many of them dating back hundreds of years .
